What is coaching? Helping people get what they want without the coach doing it for them or telling them what to do. "The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has." Is coaching like having therapy or counselling? Coaching looks at the present and the future - where you are now and where you want to be. You will not be asked to explore or analyse the past. Are there different types of coaching? Yes. There are many definitions of coaching as well as different models of coaching: eg career coaching, life coaching, business coaching, leadership coaching, executive coaching and coach-mentoring. What’s the difference between a career advisor and career coach? Career advisors may offer you aptitude testing and job search services like resume writing. A career coach will offer you career management advice and coaching specific to your career issues. A career coach doesn’t find you a job; they ask perceptive questions, challenge your limiting beliefs, develop your awareness of your strengths and skills. A career coach will focus on the big picture, your vision, and help you to gain clarity, set some goals, take action and be accountable. Is coaching the appropriate discipline for the changes I want to make? Coaching is not always the solution. Is there a syllabus or set programme? No. You set the agenda. However, the coach will follow certain steps or principles which give structure to the process. Our 5-Step Career Coaching Programme follows the five steps of career search, and we propose 6 sessions to cover these steps adequately. What else should I expect?

How much does coaching cost? The average national rate is between £70 and £200 an hour (according to a survey by the Association for Coaching). What qualifications are necessary for someone to call themselves a coach? The market is not regulated; anyone can call themself a coach. Check carefully before investing your time and money. A trained coach will be able to describe their model of coaching, their qualification. They are likely to be a registered member of a professional coaching body.
